A solar carport or canopy is an engineered steel structure whose roof is made of solar panels, giving your car shade and your home extra generation without relying on the house roof. It suits homes with shaded, small, complex or unsuitable roofs, and it pairs naturally with an EV charger mounted right where you park. It costs more than rooftop solar because you are paying for the structure as well, and it involves engineering, footings and a check of the planning pathway, but for the right property it turns an unused driveway into a useful power source.
When a carport makes more sense than the roof
Most homes are still best served by rooftop panels, which cost less per kilowatt because the structure already exists. A carport or canopy earns its place when:
- The roof is heavily shaded by trees, neighbouring buildings or a second storey, while the driveway gets good sun.
- The roof is small or awkward, with many hips, skylights or short sections that leave little usable space.
- The roof material is unsuitable, such as asbestos cement, or the roof is due for replacement.
- Street appearance matters, for example on some heritage homes where a rear canopy is less visible than panels on the front roof.
- You want shade and generation together over a car space, outdoor area or pool-side pergola.
- You drive an EV and want charging and generation in the same place.

How much a carport can generate
Output is limited by the footprint. As a rough guide, using modern panels of around 2 square metres each:

Because a freestanding structure can be angled towards the north, output per panel can match or beat a typical roof when the site is unshaded. A double-bay canopy lands in the same range as a 6.6 kW rooftop system, which as a rule of thumb produces roughly 24-27 kWh a day on average in Sydney. Some designs use double-glass panels that let a little light through to the space below and can pick up some light reflected from the ground.
Engineering and construction
A solar carport is a structure first and a solar system second. Panels on a raised frame catch the wind like a sail, so the design has to handle uplift as well as weight. The engineering covers:
- Wind region and terrain, which set the loads that the frame, fixings and footings must resist
- Footings sized for the soil, typically concrete pads or bored piers, with underground services located before any digging
- Steel frame and spans, including clearance height for vehicles and room to open car doors
- Water management: standard panels are not a watertight roof, so rain falls through the gaps unless the design adds sheeting, channels or gutters
- Cable routes from the canopy to the switchboard, usually underground in conduit
- Corrosion protection, such as galvanised or powder-coated steel and suitable fixings, especially within reach of coastal salt air
- Certification of the structural design by an engineer

Approvals in NSW
Depending on its size, height, setbacks from boundaries, the zoning of the land, heritage or conservation status and bushfire-prone land mapping, a carport in NSW may be exempt development, complying development or need a development application. We look at the likely pathway for your property early, before detailed design, so a council process does not come as a surprise after you have committed. Build the approval step into your timing: a design that needs a development application can take considerably longer to start than one that fits within exempt or complying development rules. Strata properties also need owners corporation approval.

A solar carport is the obvious place to charge an EV: the car is parked under the panels and the cable run is short. Good design choices include:
- Running conduit for the charger cable through the frame during construction, rather than surface-mounting it later.
- Choosing a solar-matching charger that follows available surplus using a CT clamp, so daytime charging draws on your own generation.
- Allowing for a second charger or a future battery in the cable and switchboard sizing.
- Checking whether single-phase or three-phase supply suits your driving and the charger you want.

Costs and incentives

Frequently asked questions
Can a solar carport be attached to the side of my house?
Sometimes. An attached canopy can reduce the number of posts, but it transfers load to the house wall, fascia or slab edge, which the engineer must check and which may not suit every older home. Attached structures can also be treated differently for approvals. Freestanding designs are often simpler to engineer and approve, and they keep the solar structure independent of the house.
Is it safe to park and walk under solar panels?
A properly engineered, certified and installed solar carport is designed for exactly that. Cabling runs in conduit and within the frame, and connections sit well above head and vehicle height. As with any carport, stay clear of the structure in severe storms, never let anyone climb onto the canopy, and have fixings, cabling and the frame's protective coating inspected periodically.
How are panels on a carport cleaned?
Carport panels are lower and easier to reach than a roof, but the glass must never be walked on and the structure is not designed for foot traffic. Panels that can be reached from the ground can be rinsed with a soft brush on a pole and plain water, without detergents or high-pressure sprays. Anything that needs a ladder is a job for a professional cleaning service.
