Charging an EV from a standard 10A or 15A household powerplug is the simplest option and requires no additional installation beyond confirming your circuit can safely handle sustained load. It's slow — typically adding around 10–15km of range per hour — which is fine for a car that always has overnight time to charge, but it offers no ability to intelligently track solar output.

Dedicated Fast EV Chargers

A dedicated single-phase (typically up to 7kW) or three-phase (up to 22kW, switchboard and network-dependent) EV charger is hardwired to your switchboard and can add 40km or more of range per hour. Beyond raw speed, the real advantage is intelligence: modern units can be set to solar-priority mode, dynamically adjusting charge current to match your available solar surplus in real time.

How does solar-priority EV charging actually work?

An intelligent charger connected to your system's monitoring and metering setup constantly checks how much solar power is being exported versus consumed. When there's spare solar — say your panels are producing 5kW and the house is only using 1.5kW — the charger ramps up to use that 3.5kW surplus for the car, rather than exporting it at a low feed-in tariff. If a cloud passes over or household usage spikes, the charger automatically scales back, or can be configured with a minimum charge guarantee to ensure the car is ready by a set time.

For households with a battery installed, the logic can be layered further — some setups prioritise battery charging first to secure evening household backup, then direct remaining surplus to the EV, with the priority order configurable to match what matters most to you.

What does this mean in real terms?

A typical EV with a 60–75kWh battery, charged predominantly from a 10kW solar system's midday surplus using a solar-priority fast charger, can cover the majority of an average Sydney commuter's weekly driving on power that would otherwise have exported to the grid at a low feed-in rate. Over a year, that's a meaningful chunk of "free" driving.

How do I choose the right charger for my home?

  • Vehicle compatibility — confirming your EV's onboard charger capacity so you're not paying for charging speed the car can't use
  • Switchboard capacity — many older Sydney homes need a switchboard upgrade or dedicated circuit to safely support a fast charger, which we assess as part of your quote
  • Single-phase vs three-phase supply — three-phase unlocks higher charging speeds but isn't available or economical at every property
  • Integration with existing solar and battery — confirming your inverter and monitoring system can communicate with the charger for true solar-priority operation
  • Charging habits — a household charging predominantly overnight has different needs to one wanting to maximise daytime solar use
