Question 1: Do you already have solar, and will you keep it?

- AC-coupled: the battery has its own inverter and works alongside your existing solar inverter. This usually suits homes with a newer solar inverter that still has plenty of life left.
If your current inverter is ageing, replacing it with a battery-ready hybrid can be the better long-term decision. If it is only a few years old, we weigh the value of keeping it against the simplicity of one integrated system, and that trade-off shapes which platforms make sense.
Question 2: Single-phase or three-phase?
Our range covers both single-phase and three-phase homes, but the choice still matters. A three-phase home can use a single-phase battery, yet that battery can only supply loads on its own phase directly, and any backup is limited to circuits on that phase. A three-phase hybrid inverter spreads charging, discharging and backup across all three phases, which suits homes with three-phase ducted air-conditioning, pool equipment or a three-phase EV charger. For a single-phase home, the key checks are inverter output and whether it matches your typical evening demand.
Question 3: How much backup do you want?
Backup is where platforms differ most in practice. We look at three numbers for the circuits you want protected:
- Continuous output in kW: can the system run the fridge, lights, internet and, if required, heavier loads at the same time?
- Surge capacity: can it start motors such as pumps and compressors, which briefly draw several times their running power?
- Changeover: how quickly and automatically does the home switch to battery power, and does the platform need an extra backup device or gateway to do it?
A household that only wants lights and the fridge during an outage has more options than one that wants most of the home to keep running. Matching the backup rating to the loads you care about is often what separates two otherwise similar quotes.
Question 4: Will your needs grow?
All four brands use stackable battery modules, but module size, the maximum stack and what happens when you reach it all vary. If an EV, a heat pump, a home extension or a move away from gas is on the horizon, we size today's battery to current use and choose a platform with room to add modules later, rather than asking you to pay upfront for capacity you may not need for years. If your plans are stable, expansion headroom matters less and other factors take priority.
Question 5: Where will it go?
The Australian standard for battery installations restricts locations, ruling out places such as habitable rooms, ceiling spaces and under stairways, and it sets clearances from doors, windows and other equipment. Within those rules, the practical questions are:
- Is there a suitable garage wall or external wall with enough width and height?
- Will the unit sit in direct afternoon sun, which is best avoided even for outdoor-rated equipment?
- Is the area prone to flooding, vehicle impact or restricted access for servicing?
- Would an integrated cabinet or a compact all-in-one unit fit better than a separate inverter and battery stack?
Question 6: How do you want to monitor and control it?
Every platform comes with an app, but they differ in how they present solar, battery and household use, how tariff windows and backup reserve are set, and how well they work with other equipment such as a smart EV charger. If you want to join a Virtual Power Plant, program compatibility also varies by platform and model, so we check it before you commit rather than after.

Can a battery from one brand work with an inverter from another?
Hybrid inverters only work with batteries listed as compatible, and unlisted combinations risk communication faults and warranty problems, so we specify matched pairs. A separate AC-coupled battery with its own inverter can sit alongside a different brand's solar inverter, because the two systems do not need to communicate directly. The metering and control settings still need careful configuration so they work together smoothly.
