An arborist assessment makes sense when a tree you want to keep is likely to shade a roof face you want to use, particularly in winter, and the design depends on how much of that tree can be pruned safely and lawfully. If the shade is minor, or comes from trees that clearly cannot be touched, a careful panel layout usually solves the problem without an arborist. In the grey area between those two, a short report from a qualified arborist often decides whether a section of roof is worth covering at all.

How shade moves through the year

In Sydney the midday sun climbs high in summer and stays low in the northern sky in winter. That seasonal swing changes shadows dramatically:

  • Summer: short shadows around midday, but the sun rises and sets south of due east and west, so trees on the south-east and south-west sides of the house can shade panels in the early morning and late afternoon.
  • Winter: long shadows all day. A tree to the north, even several metres from the house, can shade a north-facing roof for hours when production is already at its lowest.
  • Autumn and spring: somewhere in between, which is why a roof that looks clear on the day of a visit does not tell the whole story.

Tree type matters too. Evergreens such as eucalypts shade all year and keep growing, while bare deciduous branches still cast a partial shadow in winter. That is why we assess shade for each roof face across the seasons rather than judging it from what the roof looks like on one afternoon.

Why a little shade can cost a lot

Panels are wired together in strings, and the current through a string is held back by its weakest panels. Bypass diodes inside each panel let current skip a shaded section, which limits the damage, but a shadow across the lower edge of several panels can still pull a whole string's output down noticeably. Winter shade hurts twice: the days are short, and evenings are when households use the most energy and have the least solar to spare.

If you already have solar, the signs of a shade problem include a production curve that dips at the same time on every clear day, and winter output that falls away much more sharply than the change in season alone would explain.

Council tree rules come before the chainsaw

Most councils across Sydney and regional NSW have tree protection controls that require approval before removing or significantly pruning trees above a certain size, and the rules differ from council to council. Some species, heritage areas and bushland zones carry extra protection. A few practical points:

  • Check your council's tree rules before anyone cuts, including for trees on your own land.
  • If the shade comes from a neighbour's tree, talk to your neighbour first; council rules can still apply to overhanging branches.
  • Solar access on its own may not be accepted as a reason for removal, so selective pruning is often more realistic.
  • Pruning should be carried out by a qualified arborist working to recognised standards, never by someone on a ladder or a roof with a saw.

Pruning versus panel layout

Regrowth is easy to forget. A tree pruned this year will be taller in five years, so a good layout either assumes regular maintenance pruning or leaves some margin between the panels and the canopy's future shadow.

Design tools for partly shaded roofs

Quality hybrid and string inverters typically have two or more maximum power point trackers, which lets us put a partly shaded string on its own input so it does not drag down a string on clear roof. Panel-level optimisers go a step further by letting each panel work at its own best operating point, and they add panel-by-panel monitoring. They also add cost and more electronics on the roof, so we only recommend them where the shade pattern justifies it. For roofs with scattered, moving shade they can be a sensible middle ground between heavy pruning and leaving panels off.

You can, but design the system for the shade that exists today, not the shade you hope to remove. If pruning later frees up more roof, adding panels means checking inverter capacity, network approval and whether matching panels are still available. Do panels need full sun all day to be worthwhile?
