If you already have solar, the best next step is usually not a purchase. It is finding out how well your current system performs and how much of its output your household actually uses. Once you know those two things, the choice between more panels, a battery, an EV charger or simply a better electricity plan becomes much clearer. Below is the order our team works through with Sydney homeowners who already own a system, starting with low-cost checks and moving towards the bigger upgrades.
Start with the system you already own
Plenty of older systems quietly underperform for years because nobody is watching them. Before spending money on new equipment, confirm three things.
- Is it producing what it should? As a rough guide, a 6.6 kW system in Sydney produces around 24-27 kWh a day averaged across the year, with less in winter and more in summer. Compare your monitoring app or inverter display with that range, adjusted for your system size, roof direction and shade.
- How old is the inverter? The inverter is usually the first major component to need replacing. If yours is approaching or past ten years old, factor that into your plans before adding anything that connects to it.
- Are the panels clean and undamaged? Dust, bird droppings, lichen and nesting birds all cut output. Panels also lose a little output every year, commonly around 0.4-0.55%, so an older system will not match its first-year figures.

If the panels are simply dirty, professional panel cleaning typically costs $150-$300. Please never climb onto the roof yourself to clean or inspect panels.
Review your tariff before you buy hardware
Feed-in tariffs in NSW have fallen and are commonly a few cents per kWh, while electricity bought from the grid commonly costs 30-45 c/kWh. That gap explains why most upgrades pay their way: every kWh you use yourself is worth far more than a kWh you export. It also means an out-of-date electricity plan can cost you money regardless of what is on your roof.
Look at your last four bills for the daily supply charge, the usage rate, whether you are on a flat or time-of-use tariff, and the feed-in rate. Choosing your next upgrade
With the system working properly and the tariff sorted, the right upgrade depends on where your energy goes and when. This table summarises the options we most often discuss with existing owners.

The final price for any of these is confirmed after a site assessment, because roof access, switchboard condition and the equipment already installed all change the scope of work.
A battery or more panels?
A battery makes the most sense when you already export a large share of your solar and buy most of your evening electricity from the grid. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program takes roughly 30% off the installed cost of an eligible battery, and existing solar counts, so you do not need new panels to qualify. The discount steps down every 1 January and 1 July, so confirm the current value on the official program page before you sign. More panels make more sense when your daytime use already absorbs most of what you generate, for example when someone works from home or you run a pool pump and air-conditioning through the day. The catch is that the existing inverter may have no spare capacity, panels matching your originals are rarely still available, and the added capacity needs network approval. Sometimes a second, separate system is simpler than extending the first. STCs can apply to eligible new capacity, and their value steps down each 1 January.
EV charging, three-phase and blackout backup
If you own an electric vehicle or plan to buy one, a smart charger that follows your solar export can soak up surplus that would otherwise earn only a few cents. Most homes are well served by a single-phase 7 kW charger. A three-phase upgrade is only worth weighing up if you have several large loads, want faster charging for more than one car, or keep running into export limits.
Blackout protection is a separate decision again. Backing up a handful of essential circuits costs far less than backing up the whole house, and the right choice depends on what you genuinely need running during an outage rather than on what is technically possible.
Getting more from a battery you already own
If you already have a battery, two low-cost services can lift its value. The Battery Optimisation Service ($249) reviews the operating mode, backup reserve, tariff windows and VPP settings, with remote changes where the system allows. And from 1 July 2026, NSW offers a one-off incentive of up to $1,000 for homes that connect an existing battery to a Virtual Power Plant. Frequently asked questions
Will adding new equipment affect the warranty on my existing panels?
Adding a battery or charger does not normally affect the manufacturer's warranty on panels that are left untouched. What matters is who works on the system and how. If an installer alters the existing inverter or wiring, the workmanship on that part becomes their responsibility. Keep your original paperwork, ask for every change to be documented, and use an accredited installer so any future warranty claim is straightforward.
Can I claim STCs again if my first system already received them?
No. STCs are created for new eligible capacity, not for capacity that has already been claimed. If you add panels or install a second system, the eligible new part can attract STCs under the scheme rules at the time, while your original panels cannot be claimed twice. The value steps down each 1 January until the scheme ends in 2030, so check the Clean Energy Regulator's current guidance before signing.
How often should an existing system be professionally inspected?
A professional inspection every one to two years is a sensible rhythm for most homes, with an extra visit after a severe storm, hail, signs of animals under the panels or a noticeable drop in production. Checking your monitoring app once a month is the easiest way to catch problems between visits. Any electrical testing must be carried out by a licensed electrician, never by the owner.
