Once you accept a quote, getting from signature to a working solar or battery system follows a clear sequence: final design, paperwork and network approval, scheduling, installation, testing and commissioning, the meter change and a handover that includes your monitoring app. For most homes the physical installation takes one to two days. The steps around it take longer, mainly because of approvals and meter work. Here is what to expect at each stage, so nothing on the day comes as a surprise.

Network approval times vary, and approval can come back with an export limit that caps how much the system may send to the grid. We explain any limit before installation. STCs are created and assigned by the installer at the point of sale, and our STC rebate guide explains how that discount works.
Preparing your home
A little preparation keeps installation day moving:
- Clear a path to the switchboard, the inverter and battery location, and any roof space access
- Leave driveway space for the installation vehicle and, where needed, scaffolding or a lift
- Keep pets secured and children away from work areas
- Have your Wi-Fi network name and password ready for the monitoring set-up
- Warn anyone working from home that the power will be off for part of the day
- Let neighbours know if access or parking will be affected
What happens on installation day
Our team arrives, walks through the plan with you and sets up safety equipment, such as edge protection, scaffolding or harness anchor points, before anyone works on the roof. The work then usually follows this order:
- Roof works. Mounting rails are fixed to the roof structure, then panels are installed and wired into strings.
- Cable routing. DC cables run from the array to the inverter in protective conduit.
- Inverter and battery mounting. Equipment goes in the agreed location with the required clearances.
- Switchboard work. A licensed electrician connects the system. The power is off for this part, commonly for a few hours.
- Labelling. Isolators, the switchboard and the shutdown procedure are clearly marked.
A solar-only installation on a straightforward roof often finishes in a day. Batteries, larger arrays, two-storey access or switchboard upgrades can extend it to two. Our SAA-accredited installers handle design and installation, and licensed electricians carry out all electrical work, so please stay off the roof and away from open switchboards while work is under way. At the end of the day, packaging and offcuts are removed and the work areas are left tidy.
Testing and commissioning
Before the system is switched on, it is tested and configured. Commissioning typically includes:
- Insulation resistance, polarity and open-circuit voltage checks on each string
- Earth continuity and RCD tests
- Setting the inverter's grid protection settings to the required Australian standard, plus any export limit from the network approval
- Configuring battery modes and backup circuits, and testing the backup changeover where fitted
- Issuing the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work
What changes when a battery is included
A battery adds a few steps. Its location has to meet the Australian battery installation standard and the manufacturer's clearances, so it is confirmed at the design stage rather than decided on the day. If you have chosen backup, essential circuits may be moved to a separate backup sub-board, which adds switchboard time. For an existing solar system, our team also confirms how the battery will connect, either through a hybrid inverter or as an AC-coupled battery alongside the existing inverter. To receive the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount, the battery must be on the approved products list and installed by an SAA-accredited installer, and we confirm both before the installation date is set.
The meter change
Most homes need their meter exchanged or reprogrammed so that exports are measured correctly. In NSW this is completed through your retailer and metering provider after installation, so the timing depends on them. Depending on your network and meter, you may be asked to keep the system off, or limited to powering your home, until the meter work is complete, and we tell you which applies. Keep the meter box and any side gate accessible once the exchange is scheduled, because a locked gate or an unrestrained dog can delay it.
Handover and monitoring set-up
Before we leave, we make sure you know how your system works and where everything is:
- The monitoring app installed on your phone and connected to your Wi-Fi
- What a normal day's generation looks like, so you can spot problems
- The shutdown procedure and isolator locations
- Warranty documents, test results and your compliance certificate
- Battery settings, backup circuits and what to expect in a blackout
In the first few weeks, check the app on a sunny day and a cloudy day to get a feel for the normal range, and if you have a battery, note when it reaches full charge and how far into the evening it lasts. Your first full bill after the meter change is the real test, so confirm that exports appear and the tariff matches what you expected. Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be home on installation day?
Ideally, be there at the start so we can confirm the panel layout and equipment locations with you, and at the end for the handover. In between, we mainly need access to the switchboard, the roof space and the inverter location. If you can't be home all day, let us know beforehand and we will arrange access and a convenient time to walk you through the app.
What happens if it rains on installation day?
Safety comes first, so roof work stops if rain, strong wind or storms make the roof unsafe. Wet roofs are slippery, and electrical work in the rain carries extra risk. We watch the forecast in the days beforehand and contact you if the date needs to move. Sometimes indoor tasks, such as preparing the battery location or switchboard, can go ahead while roof work waits for better weather.
What if something is damaged during installation?
Tell us straight away, ideally with photos. Older tiles can be brittle and occasionally crack when walked on, so raise anything you notice and it will be assessed and put right.
