Why roof suitability isn't a yes/no question

A north-facing roof with no shading might comfortably support a large, highly efficient array. A predominantly west-facing roof with a big gum tree shading the afternoon sun might still be worth doing — but with a smaller array, different panel placement, and a sizing approach that accounts for reduced afternoon output. Our checker gives you that nuance rather than a blunt pass/fail.

What does the checker assess?

Orientation

Roof orientation is the single biggest factor in solar output. In the southern hemisphere, north-facing sections generally produce the most energy across the day, followed by east and west, with south-facing sections producing meaningfully less. Most Sydney homes have some mix, and the checker identifies how much usable area you have on each aspect.

Shading

Shading is assessed using your address, roof photos, or satellite imagery to identify trees, neighbouring buildings, chimneys and other obstructions — since shading patterns from a tree can shift significantly between summer and winter sun angles. Even partial shading on a single panel in a string can disproportionately reduce that string's output, which is why this step matters more than many homeowners expect.

Pitch

Roof pitch affects both output and installation approach. Very low-pitch or flat roofs usually need tilt-frame mounting to achieve optimal panel angle, while steep pitches can affect accessibility and methodology. The checker flags where your roof sits and what that means practically.

Structure and Material

Tile, colorbond/metal deck, and concrete roofs each have different mounting requirements, and older roofs may need a condition check before panels go on top — there's little point installing a 25-year warrantied system on a roof that needs re-roofing in five years. The checker asks about your roof material and approximate age.
