Monocrystalline cells are cut from a single, continuous silicon crystal, grown in a controlled process that produces a highly uniform crystal structure. Polycrystalline cells are made by melting multiple silicon fragments together, which is cheaper to produce but results in a less uniform crystal structure with more internal boundaries where electrons can be lost as they move through the cell.
Those internal boundaries in polycrystalline cells mean more energy is lost as heat rather than converted to electricity, which translates to lower efficiency per square metre of panel. Practically, this means a monocrystalline system will generate more power from the same roof area — a meaningful consideration on Sydney rooftops where usable roof space is often the limiting factor, not budget.
