Both materials need different mounting approaches to besser-block or newer Colorbond roofs: tile roofing requires careful tile replacement or specialised tile-hook mounting to avoid cracking, and slate demands even more caution, since slate tiles are brittle, often irreplaceable in a matching style, and expensive to repair if damaged during installation. This is not a job for an installer who mostly works on new-build Colorbond roofs in outer suburbs and treats every roof the same way.
Several Inner West local government areas maintain heritage conservation areas covering large parts of their older residential streets. While solar panels are generally exempt from development approval requirements under NSW state planning provisions in most circumstances, heritage-listed individual properties or particularly sensitive streetscapes can occasionally involve additional council consideration — particularly around visibility from the street and, in some cases, panel placement on street-facing roof planes.
